This performance proposes a non-ableist framework and strives to ensure that accessibility is considered throughout the creative process, rather than as an accessory to the presentation. Thus, it incorporates both Portuguese and Portuguese Sign Language in the creation of a bilingual performance, integrates audio description into the text creation, and aims for the movements and interpretative layers—aware of their limitations—to encompass all bodies and all perceptions.
On stage, representation gradually gives way to abstraction, and words give way to sound and gesture… And everything falls, making space for silence and contemplation.
This process of deconstruction is reflected in the text spoken by the actress, the integrated audio description, and in the stylization of the scenic movement and Portuguese Sign Language.
“Paisagens Inúteis” is a bilingual performance (Portuguese and Portuguese Sign Language) that dares to consider all abilities as a premise for accessing and engaging with the landscape. It aspires to be accessible and yet fails, proudly embracing its attempt. It is both a real and metaphorical journey toward the horizon. It is an odyssey: useless and anti-utilitarian. Along the way, there are various stops—or perhaps, they are landscapes?
